About
Newmarket is the headquarters of British flat racing, a flat-only venue with two adjoining tracks, the Rowley Mile and the July Course.
The Track & Course
Both are wide, galloping, straight tracks that rise to a stiff finish through the Dip, demanding a high cruising speed, class and stamina. There is no turning to exploit, so it is a true test where big-field draw effects depend largely on where the pace and watering fall.
Going & Ground
The expansive Heath turf is well-managed and tends to ride on the sound side, though the rising finish always asks a stamina question.
Key Races
The 2000 and 1000 Guineas open the Classic season on the Rowley Mile in May, with the July Cup, Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire among many other top contests.
