Northumberland Plate Betting Offers and Promotions

Northumberland Plate horse racing betting offers can, in all honesty, be a little harder to come by than you may have first thought. It is a major event and a highlight of the flat racing season, however, much of the excitement surrounding the race is concentrated in the North East region, meaning that it doesn’t garner quite the same Nationwide interest as perhaps the wonderful Coral Eclipse race. Not to worry though; betting sites will still allow you to use their best odds guaranteed promotions, and you may even be able to redeem some the free bet deals you’ve been saving on certain selections. To be sure, we suggest combing through the T&Cs of the different promotions available at your preferred betting sites. In addition, it always pays to keep close tabs on the promotions pages of operators you use the most; you never know when an odds price boost or bet refund deal might appear!

Northumberland Plate Betting Odds Levels

For the same reason that bonuses and promotions for the event can be a little scarce, Northumberland Plate betting odds levels have also proven to be a little less generous. Due to it not command quite the same nationwide attention as other premier flat races, betting sites have been known to lower their payout prices just a tad, with the average numbers for recent years coming in at around the 85% mark.

With regard to favourites, the Northumberland Plate is like most top-level flat races, such as the emphatic Haydock Sprint Cup, in that the results can be unpredictable. In the last fifteen years, there have only been three winning favourites, so there’s no real benefit of placing super early wagers in the hope of getting a better price on a front-runner. One statistic that is probably worth noting, however, is that thirteen races run over the last fifteen years have produced winners aged six or less…

Some Interesting Facts

Since its first outing in 1833, the Northumberland Plate has traditionally been held in June of each year. Making it one of the oldest of the many horse racing events reviewed by us. A shared purse of £150,000 for those that manage to place and around £90,000 for the first-place winner makes the Northumberland Stakes the richest two-mile handicap in Europe and among the richest in the world. It is the culmination of a three-day festival that has been known to feature some top events such as the Group 3, Hoppings Stakes for top-class fillies; the Grade 2, Seaton Delaval Handicap Stakes; and the Betfred Chipchase Stakes, a 6-furlong sprint of Grade 2 status.

The most successful jockeys in recent times have been Willie Carson, a Scottish born OBE who won in 1990 with Al Maheb and again in 1996 with Celeric, and Kevin Darley who won in 1999 with Far Cry and Bay of Island in 2000. Paul Cole, a famous, British trainer who has also won the Epsom Derby, the Ascot Gold Cup and numerous international trophies have been the most successful trainer of the last few decades. He won the race on three occasions, with Windsor Castle in 1997, with Cyrian in 1998 and with Archduke Ferdinand in 2001.

The Story So Far

This heritage event is known locally as the Pitmen’s Derby. It was formerly the most-anticipated race in the holiday period previously known as Race Week, which was a social event for local mine workers. It was officially ended as a holiday in 1949. The Northumberland Plate has changed sponsorship hands several times over the years. It was once partnered with the trademark, British bitter brewing company, John Smiths, from 2003-2016 before switching to the railway maintenance company, Stobart Rail Limited, in 2017.

When it comes to winning the hearts and minds of horse racing enthusiasts and causal one-time-punters in the North East there’s only ever one winner. The Northumberland stakes is – and has for a very long time – been the most famous horse race to take place in the region and thus, attracts a wonderfully diverse crowd of eager spectators every year. In local circles, particularly among the ladies, the Northumberland Plate carries the same kind of weight as Royal Ascot with regard to fashion. Many among the attendees opt for their finest ensembles as they compete for best-dressed prizes and hope to get snapped by one of the many leading fashion publications that regularly cover the event.
