Laytown Racecourse Guide
About
Laytown in County Meath stages the only officially sanctioned beach racing in Ireland and Britain. Racing takes place on the sand once a year, in a single September meeting.
The Track & Course
The races are run on a straight course marked out on the beach, with the timing of the card set by the tides. Speed and a good start are important, and the unusual surface means form from conventional tracks may not carry over.
Going & Ground
The going depends on the beach and the tide rather than rain, and the sand can ride differently from one race to the next.
Key Races
The annual September meeting is the only fixture, a one-off day of Flat racing that draws large crowds to the beach.
