Galway Racecourse Guide
About
Galway racecourse at Ballybrit is famous for its summer festival, one of the biggest social and betting events of the Irish racing year. It stages both Flat and National Hunt racing.
The Track & Course
The track is a right-handed circuit of about a mile and a quarter with a sharp downhill run around the final turn and a steep uphill finish. Horses that are handy, well balanced and can quicken up the hill tend to do best, and getting a clear run matters in big fields.
Going & Ground
Summer festival ground is often good, but heavy rain during the week can quickly turn it soft, which changes how races are run up the final climb.
Key Races
The Galway Festival in late July and early August runs for seven days and features the Galway Plate and the Galway Hurdle, two of the most competitive handicaps in Irish racing.
