Doncaster Racecourse Guide

About

Doncaster racecourse on Town Moor in South Yorkshire is one of Britain's major racecourses and home to the St Leger, the oldest of the five Classics. It opens and closes the turf Flat season each year and also stages National Hunt racing through the winter.

The Track & Course

The Flat track is a left-handed, pear-shaped circuit of around two miles that is flat and galloping, with a long home straight. There is also a straight mile, where big fields can split across the track and the draw can play a part. It is a fair course that suits long-striding horses with stamina.

Going & Ground

The ground is usually good in the summer and early autumn, while the spring opener and the November finale can ride soft. The jumps course drains well and often provides decent winter ground.

Key Races

The St Leger Festival in September is the highlight, with the St Leger itself, the Champagne Stakes and the Doncaster Cup. The Lincoln Handicap in the spring and the November Handicap bookend the turf season, and a Group 1 for two-year-olds in October completes the big days.
