Curragh Racecourse Guide
About
The Curragh in County Kildare is the headquarters of Irish Flat racing and stages all five Irish Classics. It sits on wide open plains surrounded by training yards and was rebuilt with a new grandstand that opened in 2019.
The Track & Course
The main course is a right-handed horseshoe of about two miles that is wide and galloping, with a slight rise in the closing stages. There is also a straight course for sprints and races up to a mile, where the stands side or far side can be favoured on the day.
Going & Ground
The well-drained plains usually provide good ground in summer, though spring and autumn meetings can ride soft. Watch the going reports, because ground changes can shift the draw bias on the straight course.
Key Races
The Irish Derby in the summer is the centrepiece, alongside the Irish 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, the Irish Oaks and the Irish St Leger. Top two-year-old races in the late summer and autumn also make it a key venue for future stars.
