Cheltenham Racecourse Guide
About
Cheltenham racecourse at Prestbury Park, set beneath Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire, is the home of jump racing in Britain. It stages National Hunt racing only, from the autumn through to the spring, and is best known for the Cheltenham Festival in March.
The Track & Course
Racing takes place on two left-handed, undulating courses, the Old Course and the New Course, plus a cross-country course used for specialist races. Both main courses finish with a famous uphill run from the last obstacle to the line, which sorts out the stayers and has turned many races in the final strides.
Going & Ground
The going is often soft in midwinter, while the Festival is usually run on good to soft ground. Because the ground and the hill both test stamina, form from flatter, sharper tracks does not always carry over here.
Key Races
The four-day Cheltenham Festival features the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Stayers' Hurdle. The November meeting, the December International meeting, New Year's Day and the January Trials day also attract top-class fields.
