The other major event to take place on Welsh Grand National day is the Finale Juvenile Hurdle, a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle for three-year-olds worth £50,000. It is the first of three Grade 1 steeplechases for juvenile competitors to take place in the year – the other two are the Triumph Hurdle and the Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices’ Hurdle. The Triumph hurdle is held a few months later at the Cheltenham Festival in March while the Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices’ Hurdle is staged at the Aintree Grand National.

The Welsh Grand betting centres around a handicap race for horses aged four years and above and is run over a distance of 3 miles and 5½ furlongs. There are a series of twenty-two fences to be jumped and, given its timing in late December, conditions have sometimes been less-than-perfect. Most recently it was postponed in 2017 due to a waterlogged track, however, it was also postponed in 2010 – due to snow and frost – in 2012 and in 2015.

The Story So Far

The Welsh Grand National was inaugurated in 1895 and was originally held at the old Ely Racecourse in the capital, Cardiff, where remained until 1939 when it closed down. After World War II it was transferred to Caerleon, a picturesque town located on the River Usk close to Newport, before changing one last time to its present venue in Chepstow. The winner of the first National at its current venue was Welshman Dick Francis, crime novelist and winner of some 350 races in his career which spanned over ten years.

The Welsh Grand National has been won by some true greats of British jump racing in its three-century-long history – which has in turn made Welsh National betting a key market for British bookies. Among the greats are Native River, an Irish-bred, British-trained thoroughbred that won the National in 2016 and also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Hennessy Gold Cup in his career; Synchronised, another Irish-bred, British-trained gelding that also managed victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and was a specialist long-distance steeplechaser; and Silver Birch, an Irish gelding that won the Welsh National aged seven was also a champion of the Aintree Grand National.
